My fascination with koi began in 1979. I was intrigued by the beauty of the fish. At that time, I only had a 500gallon goldfish pond. Since I could not afford the more expensive koi, I just bought what I thought was pretty. My desire to learn more about the koi lead to purchasing Koi Books and Koi Magazines. I found a book written by Dr. Kuroke who suggested joining a Koi Club and getting involved in Koi Shows would help learn more about Koi. Dr. Kuroke also suggested taking my fish (what I thought was pretty) to the Koi Shows. Finally, in 1987, I joined ZNA Southern California, built a 12,000 gallon pond, and took my inexpensive but pretty fish to my first Beginner Koi Show Competition. I won some trophies and I was happy. The second year I entered an Open Koi Show Competition and did not win anything. I tried to discover why my fish did not win and got very little answers. One of the answers I do remember was, ?No way is a cheap fish going to win over an expensive fish?. These words made me want learn more about koi so that I could one day win with a so-called, ?cheap fish?.

คำถามที่2.ไม่ทราบว่าอาจารย์มีมุมมองในการเลือกปลามาเลี้ยงเป็นอย่างไรครับ?..

With Gosanke, I choose the quality of the Beni first. If the Beni is poor grade but the fish has a good pattern, I will not buy the fish. Next, I look at body confirmation, Shiroji, Sumi, Pattern, and Sex. I believe good beni, body confirmation, shiroji, acceptable pattern, and female increase my chances of maintaining its? beauty with growth.

With Shiro utsuri, I select body confirmation, then sumi and shiroji. If this particular type of koi does not have a good body confirmation I will not go any farther. It has been difficult to find a shiro utsuri with all three good qualities.

In the Hirkari Family, I look at its? sheen first. If the sheen is poor, I don?t bother looking at the rest.

คำถามที่3.จากมุมมองดังกล่าว อาจารย์มีความชอบส่วนตัวที่จะซื้อปลาแบบไหนครับ?..

My favorite is the Showa, but I do like a variety of good quality koi in my pond. And, I prefer Tatekoi rather than fully developed fish. I learn a lot by watching the changes that occur as the fish develops. I must admit, it teaches me to be patient. If I intend to keep a fish for a long time, I usually choose by quality, body confirmation, then sex of the fish. I also tend to select quality over a brand name or blood line.

People tend to buy fish based on Bloodline or Brand Names, which can lead to large sums of money spent. It?s nice to be able to afford it but you can find quality koi from any breeder if you know what to look for. I believe that there is nothing wrong with purchasing by bloodline or brand name, as long as you know what to look for. There are no guarantees that bloodline or brand name fish determine a future champion.

คำถามที่5. อยากให้อาจารย์นิยาม ตัวตนของอาจารย์ครับ(ในการเลี้ยงปลา)?
My philosophy regarding koi keeping is simple. I believe this hobby can be for anyone. I find it rewarding when I can apply the knowledge I?ve learned in choosing a fish and watch it become a show koi. I find that I?ve learned to be patient and find it a relaxing hobby. Though I think I?ve learned a lot about koi, I believe there is still much more to learn. I will continue to listen and ask questions. It seems that I spend a lot of time researching. But, I find this a fun hobby and enjoy it. My proud 5 years old shiro utsuri won the Grand Champion at the local koi show. At the age of 2 years old it was mostly a white fish and I paid less than $200.
